There are many topics students can explore to determine if opinions being offered are, in fact expert opinions that likely to be accurate. Ask students to brainstorm a list of current issues many people have opinions about that they might want to explore further. For example, they might suggest:

  1. What was the underlying cause of the 2019 measles outbreak in WA?
  2. Is climate change responsible for increasingly severe storms?
  3. What has caused the recent crashes of two Boeing 737 Max 8 planes?
  4. Does switching back and forth between Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time really harm people?
